What is Freon?
Freon, also a refrigerant or coolant, is a non-combustible gas that undergoes state-of-matter changes to help produce cold air. The air conditioner’s compressor pushes down on the freon, greatly increasing its temperature. The gas then moves into the coils, cooling down into a liquid form. The cooled freon can now absorb the heat from the outside air and push the cold air out to cool your home or business. It is then recycled to the compressor again. Freon never needs to be refilled or topped off in your air conditioning system. If your system is running low, it means you have a leak.
Sign of a Freon Leak
Freon is odorless and tasteless, so if a leak happens, you may not know right away. Some of the signs of a small leak are:
- A decrease in air pressure and temperature. With less freon, your air conditioner will not be able to produce as cool of temperature. It also makes the system work harder.
- You will see an unexpected increase in your energy bill. The system will work longer and run more often as it tries to keep up with the temperature.
- A hissing sound may be coming from the refrigerant lines.
- Condensation coils may accumulate ice. Water may also pool on the ground around the condenser.
Symptoms Of Freon Poisoning
A dangerous aspect of a freon leak is its effect on those in the home or business. Freon can affect your respiratory system and can be deadly. If you or someone else shows any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention immediately:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Labored breathing
- Phlegm cough
- Irregular heartbeat
- Buildup of fluid in the lungs
- Confusion, mental fatigue
- Loss of consciousness
- Seizures
